Hotel El Prado

Barranquilla

You can’t beat a grande-dame hotel, and El Prado is so storied it’s virtually a cliché. Polite bellboys dash out to carry your bags, copious palm trees (at least 100 of ‘em) crowd a giant central garden, a lovely clear pool is large enough to swim laps in, and the buffet breakfast should keep you going until at least 3pm.

Rooms are a little less illustrious and carry some slightly worn and grubby details under closer examination, but they're comfortable and not bereft of space, with bouncy beds and complimentary water.

Stay here long enough and you'll discover that the place is big enough to get lost in, with an executive tower, ample common areas and acres of chess-board-patterned passageways humming with history.
