Arenal Observatory Lodge

Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal

High on the Arenal slopes, this sprawling lodge is the only accommodation in the national park. Rooms range from La Casona’s rustic doubles without bathrooms (but with nice views from the porch), to junior suites with king-size beds, local art and huge picture windows framing the volcano. The rooms (paper-thin walls) could stand a bit of improvement, as could the night-time lighting.

There’s a decent international restaurant on the grounds (there’s hardly anywhere else to eat in the area). There’s also a small museum, with exhibits on the history, volcanology and hydrology of Arenal. Rates include access to the swimming pool and hiking trails, as well as a free guided walk each morning.
