Husband-wife owners Fouad and Karima have gradually transformed their family home into an elegant restaurant, complete with brocade cushions and painted wood ceilings – but the food remains hearty and home-cooked, and the welcome as warm as if you were visiting relatives. Set menus include kebab and couscous dishes, as well as a special lamb tajine made from a family recipe.
Karima also teaches a morning cooking class, starting with souq shopping and ending with lunch (Dh600 for four people). Book ahead, and Fouad can come collect you so you won't struggle to find the place. If you do walk, look for a covered lane running northwest painted with colourful murals, including one for Dar Hatim; the restaurant is at the end. The couple also run a nearby guesthouse, Riad Al Fassia Palace.
