Sunrise Camp

Jebel Shams

In a tranquil location near a dramatic mountain precipice, this remote camp makes for a peaceful retreat. Beds are offered in Arab-style tents or simple concrete chalets, all with private bathrooms. Guests huddle inside the dining room during bitter winter nights or round their own campfires. Pitch your own tent for OR8 (including breakfast) – dinner costs OR8.

The camp is located in an interesting landscape of gnarled juniper trees with lots of ad hoc hiking possible. A three-hour marked trail offers fine views of Rustaq, thousands of metres below. Transfers from Al Hamra cost around OR55. To reach the camp, follow the directions to Jebel Shams but turn left at a junction bearing the camp's signboard a few kilometres after the end of the sealed road, before you reach the Jebel Shams plateau. The graded road (4WD essential) zigzags up a neighbouring flank of the mountain; as an alternative route back to the junction after your stay, you can circuit close to the summit via the villages of Krub and Al Marrat.
