Silks Place Hotel

Taroko National Park

This luxurious 160-room hotel makes liberal use of wood and stone, and has a rooftop infinity pool that surveys the Taroko Gorge with a fireplace area around which there are nightly singing performances (dances at weekends). There's a second indoor pool plus spa and sauna (extra charges), and a roster of activities, walking tours and cooking classes.

Less expensive rooms face inwards around a triangular lawn area, many having show bathrooms (with curtains). Gorge-view guest rooms carry a supplement of around NT$1500, many of them designed Japanese-style with mattresses on raised wooden platforms. Rates usually include half-board with buffet meals served at the guest-only Wellesley Restaurant. If not overly booked, non-guests can take lunch at the à la carte Mei Yuan restaurant.
