Ross Lake Resort

Top choice

The floating cabins at this secluded resort were built in the 1930s for loggers working in the valley soon to be flooded by Ross Dam. There's no road in – either hike the 2-mile trail from Hwy 20 (then call for a quick $2 boat ride across the lake) or take the ferry from the parking area near Diablo Dam.

Cabins vary in size and facilities, but all feature electricity, plumbing and kitchenettes. Bedding and kitchen supplies are provided, but guests should bring food. The resort rents canoes, kayaks and motorboats, and operates a water-taxi service for hikers destined for trailheads around the lake. You can also take the Diablo Lake ferry one way, hang out at the resort, then hike back to your car on the moderate 3.8-mile Diablo Lake Trail. Note that there's no internet or phone reception out here, so this is a complete getaway.
